    URBAN HEAT ISLANDS

    Buildings and pavement absorb varying amounts of the sun's energy instead of reflecting it away, causing the temperature of the surfaces and the air around it to rise. These higher temperatures result in the urban heat island effect.

    On a hot, sunny summer day, the sun can heat dry, exposed urban surfaces to temperatures 50°-90°F hotter than the air. Elevated temperatures from urban heat islands can negatively affect a community’s environment and quality of life.

    In response, the USGBC has made reduction of the urban heat island a part of the LEED certification program.
