Let Us Help Clear the Air About Architectural Concrete

Architectural concrete is one of the most multi-faceted Green building products available. This long lasting and durable material can be enhanced with a wide variety of colors and surface finishes that make it an excellent design choice when both sustainability and creative expression are desired. In both LEED® and Green Globes, the use of architectural concrete can result in considerable points towards increasing the rating of a building or development.

Interior architectural concrete floors emit no toxic materials, are perfect for radiant heating systems, and never need to be replaced. Concrete can be colored, stained, stamped or ground and polished, reducing the need for other materials. Architectural concrete also provides buildings with thermal mass, which contributes to energy efficiency.

Exterior concrete hardscapes can reflect more sunlight and help to cool the atmosphere. Special formulations and colors with higher SRI and photocatalytic properties can reduce the urban heat island effect by reducing surface temperatures. This reduction has secondary benefits including decreased energy consumption.

Scofield is widely recognized by architects for being a pioneer in developing and promoting Green building practices. Scofield is honored to have earned the Architect's Choice for Excellence (ACE) Award for two years in a row in the category – Concrete: Concrete Materials. These consecutive awards reflect the ongoing commitment to innovation, high quality, continuing education and superior customer service that Scofield has delivered to architects for nearly 95 years.

Scofield will be at the 2009 ASLA Show & Expo in Chicago! Come by our booth # 2010 to learn about our latest exciting development in sustainable products!

The following products may contribute to achieving LEED credits in
New Construction, Existing Building, Schools, Core and Shell LEED Section:
Sustainable Sites - 7.1 Heat Island Effect, Non-Roof
(certain colors apply, refer to SRI charts)
SOLACHROME™ Integral Treatment for High-SRI Colored Concrete SOLACHROME Integral Treatment for High-SRI Colored Concrete is the first patent-pending color additive specifically formulated to reduce the urban heat island effect, and is an exciting new breakthrough in Environmental Hardscaping. SOLACHROME Integral Treatment allows the designer to look beyond the visible color spectrum to keep concrete pavement cool.

SOLACHROME Integral Treatment is available in 44 new colors, all of them permanent, non-fading and specifically developed in the laboratory to provide a Solar Reflectance Index (SRI) that exceeds the LEED requirement for use in "green" construction projects. Refer to SOLACHROME Integral Teatment's Selection Guide for SRI values.

CHROMIX® Admixtures for Color-Conditioned® Concrete Many colors of CHROMIX Admixtures have increased solar reflectivity values over plain gray concrete, so they can help reduce the Urban Heat Island Effect and contribute to credit 7.1 of the Sustainable Sites section. Refer to Scofield’s SRI chart for CHROMIX Admixtures for more information.

In addition, most standard colors and many custom colors of CHROMIX P (powder) contain approximately 99% recycled material, which could also contribute to LEED certification.

The use of freshly placed concrete in your building or hardscape plan may contribute to the Regional Materials credit (5.1, 5.2) of the Materials & Resources Section for New Construction. Consult the latest USGBC documentation for full details.

Note: a building product does not in and of itself earn LEED credits. A LEED credit is earned by meeting the criteria of a certain LEED category. These Scofield Systems may contribute to those criteria and contribute to earning the depicted LEED credits.
